I have a big project bag that I use for, well, big projects. It has pockets!

The downside to that is the accumulation of odds and ends in there, leading to ‘where’s my 4mm circular?!’ rages until I remember that I sometimes just tuck things into the pocket instead of returning them to their home.

I snapped a quick shot of the pocket contents one evening – some of them are supposed to live in the bag, but others have just been put there ‘for now’…

Resident items:

  • Pen (there’s a notebook in the body of the bag)
  • Nail file (catchy nails and knitting are not friends)
  • Crochet hook (for dropped stitches)
  • Stitch holders
  • Tapestry needle (there should be a whole tub of these in the bag,  but that’s an item I tend to lose track of easily… I blame the Borrowers)

Temporary items:

  • 4.5mm needle tips on 2m black cable (that’s my ‘trying on’ cable)
  • 6mm circular needle
  • 4mm circular needle
  • 4mm cable needle (that’s been in there for a long while, since Morvarch I think!)
  • Two scraps of grey yarn (from my Broken Glass sweater – they look like they’ve been measured out for sleeves but never used)

What are the permanent features of your project bags, and what ends up sneaking in (or out of) there?

I usually use cotton tote bags for my projects, some gifted (nice ones), some from stores (not that nice sometimes). They get emptied after the project. I do not have multiples of my notions, that are stored in specific little pouches. These pouches come with me if I leave the house, otherwise they are in a huge woven basket where my own thugs get lost 😺❤️

I use totes as well – and I have a small rainbow IKEA bag that I really like. I have multiples of tapestry needles and tubs of stitch markers. They live everywhere. I have some duplicate circular needles, theoretically they live in their own case but as you see, in reality they are sometimes tucked away in a pocket… It’s easier to forget to tidy them, too, since they’re out of sight!

Absolutely, we need a whole management team for these 😺

Early in my knitting career I purchased a 6 in. by 4 in. see-through toolkit. I curated a selection of tools and other objects that I frequently need while knitting. It lives on the table next to “my” chair where I usually knit. The only things I keep in project bags are the yarn, the pattern, the needles and the WIP itself. When it’s time to travel with my knitting, I just drop the zip toolkit into the project bag and go.

See this is smart! Much better than my (lack of) system 😆

Love this !! I have pockets where I have found missing stitch markers , measuring tape and my fav scissors lol. and I also carry a nail file ! I store my darning needles in a roll of wool fabric and have been saying for years that I really need to make a needle book just for my wool darning needles . I also use a short stitch holder ( the one that looks like a large safety pin ) to clip my stitch markers on . Carabiner clips and great for hooking most of your gadgets to.

Don’t get me started on the scissors! They hide themselves!

Needles in a roll of fabric is nicer than a plastic tub thing, what a good idea.

I’ve only recently started putting notion tins in my project bags. For the first 5 years, I used a clear cosmetic bag that I kept near whatever project I was working on. I struggle with the tins and still seem to prefer my larger cosmetic bag of goodies. I’m pretty good about always putting my needles back unless it’s a needle I need for that specific project.

I find that, despite being a Generali organised person, I need notions in a variety of places – in the project bag, but also next to my usual place on the sofa, and in my work rucksack… and I’m not going to lie, I was grateful to find a stitch marker in my pocket the other day because I’d forgotten to pack any for the car 🙃 Think I can learn from the comments on this post!

I usually just have the project and whatever bits I’ll need for it because I don’t tend to travel with my projects, except when I go to a knitting group. When that happens I have a small zippered pouch that I toss into the bag and that has a pair of small folding scissors, a case with a few tapestry needles, and a few extra stitch markers – the kind that are like plastic safety pins. Most of my knitting gets done at home, in my chair, so I have all of my supplies right next to me.

Most of mine also gets done at home but I still manage to regularly hide things from myself…

I have much of what you have but I also have a tape measure! And oodles of stitch markers live in the bottom of my knitting bag!

Don’t speak to me about the tape measure. It is elusive. It moves around in the night, I’m sure of it.

We’re obviously on the same wavelength. 20 years ago now on my still-continuing blog String-or-Nothing (the pocketses link between us 🙂 ) I posted about my gadget pouch contents. So I share it here in mutual affirmation.

Gosh, that looks familiar! I have a similar wad of stuff in my favorite knitting bag :) And a lot of the same stuff in my purse!

I actually think I need more duplicates of things, I can’t count how many times I’ve forgotten something and had to improvise. I always carry a massive handbag anyway, so maybe a little knitting pouch wouldn’t go amiss!

That’s a thought! I have some spare knitting stuff (DP I use as a cable needle, a couple stitch markers, etc.) rattling around in mine. A little pouch would be a better idea!

But will we remember to take the pouch with us?? Who could say.
