Sunday Snapshot: Set-in Sleeve

I’ve sewn in my first sleeve on the skull and crossbones jumper. I always find there’s a visible ridge between shoulder and sleeve when I do this. Am I doing it wrong?

I’ve also seamed up that sleeve and I’m pretty pleased with that. The stripes line up really nicely.

Another sleeve to set in and seam, then just the side seams and I’m done!

    I’ve never done a set in sleeve so unfortunately can’t offer advice but I think it looks ok if that helps.

    Sorry, I avoid seamed projects. I had the same problem with my Deschain top and swore when I knit it again I’ll use provisional cast-on to avoid seaming. I ended up with a very thick seam which creates the “ridge”. Wonder if there’s anything on YouTube about it? I’ll try looking in my Patty Lyons Tips and Tricks book I bought.

      I know, I usually don’t seam either but I guess I forgot? I used a tutorial to set in the sleeves but I haven’t gone googling about it. I think it wasn’t till I was taking a photo that it occurred to me maybe it *could* look better!

    I used to sew all my sweaters back then. The fabrics are from different knitting directions, it is more difficult to have a flat seam, I’ve always lived with that. I may be wrong though, I have not looked anywhere, just my experience :)

      I’ve definitely seen it before when joining sleeves, and accepted it. I never really stopped to wonder if it could be fixed by a different technique!

    Your sleeve looks great! I used to make sweaters in pieces and sew them together all the time back in the day. I’ve always had a seam that looked like that.

    I’ve only been able to avoid the visible seem if there is a shoulder cap (is that the term? Now that I’ve typed it I’m doubting myself). I do like the look of that sweater with a seem, so it looks like a win to me.

      I feel quite reassured that this is how it looks, based on what others are saying, so thank you for that! And it doesn’t look bad, I guess I just prefer a raglan or top down. But this is still a cute wee jumper!

      I think the word you could be looking for is saddle. Isn’t there a saddle shoulder that is cap like? 🤔

    Yes, there is a ridge… because you are joining stitches that are going in different directions (unlike sleeve seams where they are all flowing in the same direction… ) It looks GREAT and that ridge will relax a bit with a soak (or steam!)

    Making great progress on the sweater. Yes, I think that seam is unavoidable. You did a great job with it though, so it looks really good. Blocking should help a bit.

    Sweater sleeve looks awesome and I enjoyed reading the comments below with suggestions on how to avoid the seam ridge. I of course making to this stage of knitting your own sweater would be so delighted I got to this stage I wouldn’t care if I had the hugest ridge ever – ha!
