Prequel

I posted a quick snap of this project on Sunday and asked if the colours rang any bells for anyone.

The answer is that they’re all taken from (or adjacent to) the classic Doctor Who scarf! Click to see a photo of me with Tom Baker himself, which is a prized possession, though not as prized as the actual scarf itself.

I pulled out all the odds and ends left over from my many scarves, as well as some that had been put aside as not screen-accurate enough, and some that were similar and in small amounts that needed used up. Finally I can use these bronze shades that were too orange for my liking (but still work nicely with the other colours).

I added some more to this pile after reviewing the scrap jars, plus a pale yellow, some maroon, and a lighter purple

I’ve been thinking about Sea Glass since October when it was recommended in a comment, and once the idea of making it Who themed came to mind I literally could not wait to get started. I had cast on for socks but they were unceremoniously put aside while I skipped off to weigh yarns, to make sure I had enough for a full sweater.

The size I’m making calls for 590g (grams, not yards) and I have over 700g here so should be all set. The amounts are roughly evenly spread, and while I won’t use up every scrap, it’ll make a nice dent. I chose purple for the neck and I hope to also have enough for cuffs and hem – purple is my favourite, and also has the most stripes in the scarf so will feature most often in the sweater.

I’m following the scarf pattern to get the order of the colours. Each colour is used for two rows, in combination with the one before/ after. Since it doesn’t have the distinctive irregular stripes, it’s not immediately obvious what the colour palette is inspired by. But if you know, you know – I love that it’s a subtle homage but will also be the most colourful and least subtle item of clothing I own.

We’re visiting my in-laws for Christmas, which is a seven and a half hour drive. Since I don’t do any of the driving, that’s aaaaaaall knitting time, my friends. I’m loving working on it, even though I’ve lost a good handful of stitch markers to the passenger seat already. I have plenty more stitch markers. On with the knitting!

Looking good. Well done knitting and travellingโ€ฆ. What is sea glass? Is it eclectic mix of stash yarns or is it specific pattern?

It’s a specific pattern by Wool &Pine, designed to use up stash! I’ll put a link in my next post, forgot to do it for this one ๐Ÿ˜Š

It’s pretty good though all the yarn does completely fill my biggest project bag! I’m so pleased with how it’s coming together.

With the colouring being different in both photos I take it the natural light of the second is showing the โ€˜trueโ€™ colours – or is it as dark as the first one? (Prefer 1st one but both look good).

Seeing the 1+1 use of the different colours then taking one colour for the next repeat is giving me an idea for a childrenโ€™s jumper – even if itโ€™s only up to the armholes. It looks โ€˜more classyโ€™ than regular stripes – Just have to work out which of my leftovers to use

I think the second is closer to accurate but the truth is somewhere in between the two – both are in natural light, just different times of day and locations.

It’s definitely more interesting than regular stripes, takes more yarn of course and makes a really cosy fabric. I’m thinking of a kid’s jumper as well, I have a couple of wee pals with birthdays coming up!

HaHa, can totally relate to losing stitch markers while knitting in the car. Proud of myself for retrieving 2 stitch markers while knitting on the plane yesterday. How fun!!! Dr Who based sweater.

I found three when we got out of the car ๐Ÿ˜„ Retrieving them on a plane is much more impressive!

Isn’t it cool? And anything to use up stash is great – I got wool vouchers for Christmas so I need to get some of the existing yarn into projects to make space!

    Nice scrap yarn project!
I am so envious you got to meet Tom Baker, I might have passed out. Well maybe in my younger days, I am more level headed, less fan girly these days!

It was very fleeting but exciting all the same! I’ve worked with other Doctors properly and it’s always a thrill, no matter how many times it happens.

That is a remarkably fast-knit sweater! You must knit like the wind. I love it and would love to make one, but my knitting speed means it would take years.

I think I do knit fast, but having fourteen hours of car time to devote to it also helped!
