As you may have seen in an earlier post, my sister and I have taken a table at a craft fair, which is *this Friday*(!). So I’m feeling a number of feelings, including oscillating between ‘I have some nice items to put out’ and ‘I’m woefully underprepared’. Perhaps those are more thoughts than feelings but I’m sure you understand.

I decided last week to make another octopus and see if it sold. It’s a fairly quick make but as it stands I shall have to get a shift on if I want it finished, washed, stuffed and ready for Friday evening. This time I’m using a 2mm crochet hook (which I nearly lost to the recesses of an armchair at the weekend – cue much ‘I can feel it in there but I’m only pushing it further in’ action) and Scheepjes Cotton 8, a fingering weight yarn. Finally, I’m following the pattern recommendation and not just throwing DK at it (or chunkier yarn, which resulted in Darren).

Bum and legs complete!

I bought the yarn as a kit and used some of it to make two different blankets. This octopus is bringing me closer to finishing my stash of this particular yarn – I think I might get another octopus out of it too, though the next one may not have such even distribution of colours since I have a LOT of the pink and a very little of the yellow… But I think there will be someone out there who would just love a pink and grey octo friend.

Anyway it’s a win all round, using stash is always an achievement. And if I can use stash for profit, all to the good! Though let’s be fair, I’m liable to spend any profit immediately at someone else’s table. Shop local, you know?

I’ve added this post to the Unraveled Wednesday linkup, with thanks to Kat for hosting.

I can’t wait to see the new octo! This is way too late for the craft show this week, but for the next one you do (because I know this one will be a HUGE success!) maybe you could use your scrap yarn for small-ish things like coasters? I’ve been making a ton of mosaic coasters to give as gifts this Christmas. They work up fast and use minimal yarn. Just a thought. ๐Ÿ˜

But honestly, I am sending you all the good vibes and I truly feel that this is going to be a wonderful experience for you. โฃ

That’s a great idea! Maybe even for some Christmas crafting.

Thank you so much Erin, this comment was a delight from start to finish.

That’s some real Octo-Joy there! Such fun. Agreed, a great way to use up your stash (and such a better housewarming gift than most housewarmings I can think of.) Best of luck at the sale!

Thank you! The octopi really are quite adorable and who wouldn’t want such a sweet (and low maintenance) roomie?

Congratulations on the upcoming craft fair and you should be so proud of yourself for putting yourself out there and I hope there are lots of sales. Have fun with your sister and make that the focus, that is what I plan to do if I ever get so brave :-)
I love the photography with the black background it really makes the yarn pop and I love the colors for the new Octopie :-)

Thank you so much Tierney, I’m so grateful to have connected with lovely, encouraging souls like you! My sister and I can have a good time in an empty room so we’ll definitely enjoy ourselves. Sales would be a bonus (though naturally very validating too!).

My black coffee table is so handy for yarn photography! And the colours are cute aren’t they? Suitable for a baby but neither too pastel nor too sugary. Hope to have him finished for blogging on Friday, and then hope he finds a new home to go to and be well loved!

Speaking of octopuses*, you might enjoy listening to the audiobook of Remarkably Bright Creatures; every second or third chapter is narrated by Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus in a seaside aquarium in a small coastal town in Washington.

    * This is the correct plural of octopus. I remember reading/hearing that if a word ending in -us came from the Greek, the plural adds -es. If it came from Latin, the plural changes the final -us to -i. Or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway, Ms. Know-It-All (that’s me) has spoken.

๐Ÿ˜† Well there you go! I always felt stupid saying octopi anyway!

Thanks for the recommendation, sounds really fun.
