I love the photos of the Divergence pattern (Ravelry link) by ChristalLK (Designer’s site). The colours, the drape, the unusual shape – love it!

I’ve tried to knit it twice, and failed both times.

For what reason is my knitting this peculiar shape?

It should be a big triangle, like a ship’s sail. A bit curvy on the side, sure, but still essentially a triangle. This… this is not what I was expecting.

The pattern uses short rows to make the wedge shapes. It was my first time with short rows so after a bit more experience with them, I thought ‘I must have done something wrong, I’ll try it again’.

I still did something wrong. I really don’t know what! Does anyone have any ideas? I’m a bit of a tight knitter but this is ludicrous.

It was used for a while, after the first knit, as a lap blanket when I worked in a particularly cold office. But since I ripped it out and knitted it again, it’s mostly hung on the hat stand. I don’t have any appetite for wearing it. It mocks me with its shape!

I really love the colours in the pattern pics too, and I kept very close to them. I loved the tweedy main colour, which was a chance purchase. It has tons of fun colours and is fine to work with, despite being fuzzy. Plus the base yarn is black and white wound round each other, which is kind of a cool zebra vibe under all the bright puffs.

It came from Flying Tiger (when it was still just called Tiger) and as I recall it was labelled simply ‘Garn – Yarn’. Ravelry thinks it’s worsted but I’d say it’s more a light DK.

Could I face ripping it all out again to reuse all the pretty colours? Not immediately, but one day perhaps. Perhaps.

I fear your gauge is off… perhaps much larger needles? Her fabric looks looser than yours. I might also try a SW yarn (because that is just by nature more drape-y)

Ah OK! Two of you saying the same thing so almost certainly gauge – I did use slightly larger needles and a heavier yarn. You live and learn! Thank you so much.

Definitely a problem with gauge – did you do a test swatch? Also, it looks like i-cord along the curved edge; if it is, it’s much too tight. Actually, I like your colors better then the ones on the designer’s page; I’m not sure why – maybe the tweedy affect?

Of course I didn’t ๐Ÿ˜† but if I decide to go for a third try I definitely will. And yeah that’s a tight i-cord – I’m still learning how to do those so lots of room to improve that technique.

Thanks so much for your help. The yarn is really cute so it’s a shame for it to be used up in an item I don’t enjoy.

I concur with Kat. The pattern calls for a yarn weighing 50 grams per skein but yields nearly 500 yards. That is almost a lace weight yarn.

Oh yeah! Honestly hadn’t even considered gauge – I thought ‘it’s a shawl, it’ll be fine’.

So funny. Then I make it and wonder why it’s not fine ๐Ÿ˜†

If you want to try one more thing, you could block it severely. But then it would be difficult to frog, if you still don’t like it.

I did try moderately aggressive blocking but, as is correctly pointed out elsewhere in the comments, that icord edge has a death grip on the stitches! I’m so pleased to have some insight into where I went wrong though, and that it was as simple as the yarn I chose!

I periodically go through the collection of things Iโ€™ve knit but never wear and reclaim the yarn for something else. Iโ€™ve realized over the years that Iโ€™m more of a โ€œprocessโ€ person than a โ€œproductโ€ person, at least most of the time. As long as youโ€™re enjoying yourself, thatโ€™s what matters. ๐Ÿ˜

This rings true! I feel the same way about baking sometimes – I have made some quite fancy cakes and while I do enjoy eating them, sometimes the fancier it is the less I’m bothered about getting a slice! Making it is reward enough.

It’s also why gifting things is good – I know a gifted sweater won’t just live in my wardrobe forever and I can move on to the next knit.

Oh gosh it does look odd. Rather than undo it head to your nearest LYS and ask for help getting the correct yarn!

There is a new yarn shop at the end of my street! I’m waiting until I’m ready for serious purchasing to visit though.

I wouldn’t have been of much help in figuring out the problem, but I’m glad others have! :-) Your yarn and colors are so beautiful; hope it works out loads better when you use it again.
