I’m leaving my job this week (!) and just found out that a colleague is expecting a baby!

Naturally I wanted to make her something, but it needed to be quick. I landed on the Steady Stockinette Hat (Ravelry link) by Allison Schmidt (designer’s site). It’s free, and has a range of sizes to choose from.

I started on a newborn size but it looked so tiny that I unravelled and went with the next size up. It’s been the perfect project for my single skein of DK orange variegated yarn – I used 40g with the remaining 60g going back into stash.

I didn’t understand the part of the pattern that has you flip your work inside out. I had to read and re-read a lot of times before it sank in – possibly because I was making it while socialising so my attention was somewhat divided…

Those reverse stockinette stitches threw me for a loop

Once I figured that out, it was plain sailing, and I got the hat done in one long session (while chatting) plus a second shorter session for the decreases.

The yarn did dye my hands orange, which led to a moment of consternation as I wondered why on earth I was looking jaundiced, but it came to me eventually.

It’s a very sweet wee hat, and I may well make another in an adult size for myself!

Deadpool isn’t that happy about modelling the hat…

Later addition: it turns out I used 3mm needles instead of 3.25mm and that’s why the hat is so tiny. Hopefully the baby has a neat head?

Lovely little hat! Deadpool looks so smart in that hat, despite his not being happy! I hope this leaving your job is a good thing!

It’s good if daunting! Redundancies were being offered and I need a good rest.

Cute hat! Good luck with the next chapter and for what it’s worth, I think you’ve made a good call making it a size up from newborn. 👍

I agree, the last thing you want is a gift that can never be worn!
