I finally made socks! In 2023, I got sock yarn for Christmas and started making a pair… but just couldn’t keep myself interested. I think it was a combo of using a tiny circular needle, which was fiddly, and the fact that the colours in the yarn didn’t excite me.

And then, while things were challenging at home, I did some retail therapy and bought myself sock yarn – Luca-S Woolen Walk in Kaleidoscope. I really liked the black and white check alongside the bright colours. The yarn isn’t soft, but I do think it will wear well. Writing this post has included sternly telling myself not to buy some more.

I used the needles I bought to make my half finger gloves, the flexible double pointed ones that come in sets of three. I found it so much easier to use these, with the exception of turning the heel. I could have used an extra needle to manage that more neatly. But overall I much preferred using DPNs and there was no laddering or gaps at the start of middle of the rounds.

The heel on the right has a couple of loose stitches.. but overall I’m really happy with them!

I used Winwick Mum’s Super Sockalong resources and I found it all pretty straightforward! I didn’t have to undo or restart, not even once. I used the 3mm needles to start, then the 2.5mms to knit. The heels were the hardest part but even at that, I got through it first time.

I wouldn’t say I’m now a dedicated sock knitter but I think it’s likely I’ll make another pair before too long. They were very satisfying to make, and looking at how neatly they fit my feet is very pleasing. But next time, perhaps a toe-up, and with contrasting heels and toes. What fun.

I’ve been doing a lot of yoga. Butterfly pose is helpful for photographing socks

These are fun!! I love the yarn… I think striped socks are the best thing ever to knit, I swear they go faster than just plain yarn! I am with you, I much prefer dpns for sock knitting.

Stripes definitely go faster! All the different colours in these meant they were done at the speed of light 😁

LOVE that yarn. I love knitting toe up. No worrying about if I have enough yarn, or leftover yarn if I want to use up all the yarn. I love wearing my colorful socks.

I’m making a second pair already, toe-up, and it makes so much sense. I like any pattern where you can just keep going till you run out of yarn, takes the guesswork out!

Thank you! I feel like I can get a great rhythm with the DPNs. It took me a long time to try then again after I did a project with them very early on and felt sure I was going to injure myself with all those points… 😄

Well done! The socks look great. I’ve also found the tiny circular needles hard to get along with when making socks – they feel like I imagine knitting with toothpicks would feel!

I’ve certainly worn them quite a few times already – and started on another pair!

I love these! The colors are so great. (Now I’m tempted to pick up some of that yarn to make bright happy socks of my own!)

Those are great socks! I like the flexi-flips for socks, too. And agree that one more needle might make that heel turn/gusset decrease a little easier. But I have lots of straight dpns, and it can help to borrow one!

Perhaps I just need to invest in a wholly second set of these flexible ones – that weren’t expensive to buy after all!

I like how you think! (I have tons of needles, most of which end up in teaching samples, which means I have to buy more needles to actually knit with.)

I also have tons of needles, including quite a few handed down from family. I hate to get rid of them!

Congratulations on your first pair of socks! You did a great job with them, and that is some very cool yarn :) I know what you mean about needing an extra needle in the heel turn. These turned out just perfect!
