One of the projects I’ve finished this year so far is a take on Airy White (Ravelry link) by Sachiko Uemura (Instagram link).

I’ve also made Sachiko’s Flowers in the Air, another beaded, lace weight shawl. This time I didn’t have lace yarn to use, but I had some lovely, soft fingering yarn left over from my Fauxchet Jumper and some silver beads that I thought would go nicely together.

I knew my end result would be very different but I don’t mind that – it’s just more snuggly than airy, that’s all.

Much like Flowers in the Air, the finished shawl needed a good steam block to make it flat and drape.

The adjustments I made were:

  • Fingering yarn
  • 4mm needle
  • Adding beads as I went instead of stringing them in advance

I knitted until I ran out of yarn and called it good. I did need to buy a top up of beads, but that’s another small amount of yarn out of my stash, which is a big win.

This is beautifully made. I learned early in my knitting career to avoid lace-weight yarn, unless I plan to hold it doubled or tripled.

Thanks! I’m considering another of these with actual lace – but not immediately…

I love beaded knitting, even though it’s not really my style to wear? It looks so cool and makes me feel quite accomplished ๐Ÿ˜Š

WOW, it’s gorgeous. Bet you get a lot of wear out of it. Ok, I’m going to have to try beading one of these years.

It’s fiddly and you’ll drop beads down the sofa, but it feels like leveling up! Plus it’s fun to see people try and figure out how you did it.
