A whole hat in just four hours?! You better believe it!

It’s so fuzzy!

I had two skeins of Leader of the Pac (Hobbycraft link) in Mink, aran weight, and a skein and a half of Papatya Love (My Happy Place link) in Mushroom, DK weight. Held together they give a lovely marl, and the Papatya somewhat balances out the extreme fuzziness of the alpaca (which sheds not inconsiderably as you work). So I was ready to make a nice chunky hat by holding those two together.

I Googled ‘bias hat knitting pattern’ and this free pattern (ABC Knits link) came straight up. Which was lucky because it was for chunky yarn on 5mm needles, precisely what I wanted.

This is an unusual construction, I like the bias and the slightly pixie finish at the crown. It’s knit flat, and you purl every last stitch and slip every first, leaving nice clear rows to seam together.

Did I lose count a little on some of those short rows at the end? I did. Did I go back and rework things? I did not. I just fudged it and honestly I don’t regret a thing.

I like how the two neutrals make a subtle marl, and knitting on the bias makes for a sightly more interesting look (and knit). The hat was tight on even my small head after knitting, but a little steam opened things up nicely.

It used 90g about of the aran alpaca and about 50g of the dk yarn. Do I have enough of each left to make a scarf and some mitts? We will see!I’ve

I’ve added this post to the Unraveled Wednesday linkup, with thanks to Kat for hosting.

You seem to be knitting all the fast projects lately! :-) Love the texture on the hat. You’re right, the bias knit gives it an awesome look!

My colleague was working with a project that gives warm clothes to folk who need them and with spring coming I wanted to get some to them before they weren’t needed any more!

I wonder if two strands of 8ply would be too thick. If itโ€™s worked by rows thereโ€™d be no problem trying to get it to a certain size. Iโ€™m sure it would fit someoneโ€™s head. I might try sometime, it would be far less time than an ordinary beanie

Also will have a go at the end stitches – I usually slip first knit in back of last. Gives the โ€˜knobsโ€™ to line the rows up for sewing

Glad to hear it’s piqued your interest! It’s certainly quick so even if the experiment doesn’t work, not much lost.

It’s a cool one isn’t it? The bias makes it a bit different!

Very welcome – I didn’t think I’d enjoy churning out several of the same patterns, it’s more fun for me to find something different ๐Ÿ˜Š
