Prequel | Part One | Part Two | Part Three

Still feeling confident about finishing this up in time for Christmas gifting! I’m on to the wing tips and a quarter of the way through them. I estimate nine more hours ought to do it, plus soaking and blocking time

I really wanted to make the full large size of Wingspan this time, with no amendments. I had made something of a miscalculation and thought I’d be able to achieve that with one skein but found myself with only 10g of yarn left, which I suspected would get me half way finished the wing tips.
For about half an hour I toyed with the idea of splitting the strands on that 10g and recombining with strands of a black cotton yarn from stash (which I would also unwind). I have it a go and within a very short space of time it became clear that this was not one of my better ideas.

So I went all in on finishing the shawl in black. It’s a hard colour change, in contrast to the gradients in the rest of the shawl, which isn’t optimal – but I think it looks deliberate, and I prefer it to either a) having a mix of navy and black wing tips or b) unraveling back till I had enough navy to finish up.
It’s hard to see the final effect cos the ends are all curled up on themselves, but I’m enjoying not having to worry that I’ll run out of yarn. Plus this black has been in stash for the longest time so I’m pleased to be getting some use out of it! Also I’ve used up over 10g of it just doing the first six wing tips, so my estimate that I’d get half way with the blue I had left was absolutely incorrect.
Wish me luck for the final push!

If this is the first of these posts you’ve read, this is Wingspan (Ravelry link) by VectorKnits (Designer’s site). I’m knitting it in Scheepjes Whirl (Scheepjes website) in Blackcurrant Squeeze Me.
I’ve added this post to the Unraveled Wednesday linkup, with thanks to Kat for hosting.
