This was my first ‘oh that was the wrong yarn’ moment. I’d picked up a bulk pack of grey merino (brand long since forgotten) and used it to make a shawl, which promptly felted in the wash – but I figured, a baby is only going to wear a jumper for such a short time, and even if the recipient only gets one or two wears out of it, it’ll be super cute and soft and can be passed on to a teddy bear down the line… I did give the parents the washing instructions and let them decide. I wouldn’t do it again but oh, it really was soft and sweet!

I wanted something traditional but not old fashioned, you know what I mean? And after much browsing I landed on Wee Sherlock (Ravelry link) by Taiga Hilliard (Designer’s site) with its single cable and adorable row of buttons. The buttons are coconut shell and I bought a bulk pack so I’m now ready for all and any future coconut button needs.

It was a quick make, as tiny clothes are, with enough interest to make it fun. I was especially pleased with the cable up the middle. It was a gift for a colleague who had their first baby, and was sent along with the honeycomb blanket for the pram.

I do love a tiny knit. A quick, satisfying project and they’re adorable.
‘Promptly felted in the wash’ has my heart sinking and it would be even worse if it has happened to me. I know it happened to your scarf, but I couldn’t stand the thought of losing such a lovely gift so babe would probably only admire it in her closet lol.
That’s an adorable little jumper and I do love a coconut button.

๐Ÿ˜„ Tiny knits are so temporary anyway, he probably wouldn’t have got much wear out of it regardless of felting tendencies.

The shawl was a bummer cos it was really pretty intarsia cats, and ended up still giftable but a bit stiff…

True, but it’s still too cute to lose. I’d put it in the keep pile in her cupboard even if she never got to wear it. The tinies do grow VERY quickly. We have so many items of clothing that baby girl never wore because they went from too big to too small in a blink.

Aww, that sounds so cute too! At least it was still giftable; that’s good.

Oh my! That is just so sweet! I am sure that it is a much loved, well-worn knit! (one to pass down to future babies as well!)

Thank you! And perhaps it will survive careful washing and be handed on ๐Ÿ˜Š

Oooh I love the button placement, what a cool pattern. They go so well with that shade of yarn as well.

It is a cool pattern, and the yarn just cried out for those buttons!
