I’ve mentioned it a couple of times, and finally it’s time to share some progress! I’ve also added it to the Unraveled Wednesday linkup, with many thanks to Kat for hosting.

This is Wingspan (Ravelry link) by VectorKnits (Designer’s site). I’m knitting it in Cotton Kings Sultan Shadow (Hobbii link). I’ve come to the conclusion I don’t like working with cotton, in particular this kind of 4 ply where the individual strands are very keen to form an independent nation and fight not to get caught up in the next stitch… Still though, I think the end result will look very cool in the grey/black ombre.

I’m up to the end of section F, and the last action is I – which would suggest I was two thirds of the way done. But on the other hand, the written pattern is eight pages long and I’m on page four. So, half way? Maybe… except that the rows get wider along the way, and I still seem to have a LOT of yarn left. In any case I’m taking it one feather at a time and admiring them frequently.

I had started this knit before, got so far, dropped some stitches, got thoroughly confused, and decided to start over. It’s been so much easier and faster this time round for a couple of reasons. One, the practice in complex patterns and reading my stitches from my Morvarch Shawl. Two, I’m using the Knit Companion app. It’s awesome. I can track all the repeats, as well as the row I’m on, as *well* as tracking repeats of previous rows. There are six counters, plus a highlighter line I can drag to cover the line I’m on. I have just noticed that I don’t think it tells me when I started on a project, which is a shame, but it’s been amazing what a difference using the app has made. Highly recommend.

Look at those FEATHERS!

The colour change is quite subtle at the minute, particularly across the wings. There’s a linen stitch centre section and you can see the darker grey creeping in there if you pay attention. Note the many stitch markers which are crucial to success.

I’m really proud of how it’s looking so far. Might I have missed a couple of increases here or there? I might. Am I confident I’ve understood how to maintain a straight line up the middle of each feather? I am.

This. is. GORGEOUS! You may have even tempted me to try it after my million projects…or somewhere in there. It’s really coming along beautifully in pattern and colourway. And I can’t wait to see how the finished shawl looks.

If I’m thinking of the correct stuff, I totally feel your pain with the mutiny cotton. I, myself seem to be working with a lot of it at the moment, in 4 ply, DK and aran. It’s frustrating to knit with but seems worse for crochet. Sadly it has resulted in a lot of fluent sailor being spoken in my house.

Thank you so much! It really is beautiful and I’m managing all the complex rows much better with the app to help. Still losing the odd stitch (forgetting to do double increases is my guess) but I can live with that.

The yarn… it’s easier in cotton than in the four strand wool blend I’ve also used. Trying to knit a beaded shawl with that was… it was really something. Much sailor was spoken.

Sounds like it’s going very well. I think losing stitches is just a thing we deal with when it comes to such complex shawls and you’re dealing with so many. Thanks for the heads up that app, I must check that one out. I’ve just started using Knit & Note which is like tracker meets social media, I think. I haven’t used it a lot yet, but it’s been handy so far.

Losing occasional stitches is just one of those life things – it’s inevitable, so we may as well embrace it.

The only thing about Knit Companion is that it doesn’t record your start date so I need to get better at writing that down!

Another beauty in the works. “Keen to form an independent nation…..” Still chuckling about that one!

I’ll give you an A for patience and the confidence to tackle something as complex as a knit like this.
If given my time again hopefully these are the sort of garments I’d make and not my child size ‘Nana Knits’

An A! I will take that with thanks!

I feel I strike a good balance of knits fit friends and knits for me. Wee tiny clothes are adorable and quick, a different kind of satisfaction than these more complex, month-long projects.
