Part one here

At the size the shawl is now, these rounds still feel nice and quick – it’s one repeat, four times. It might not be quick by measurement of time, per se, but it’s quick by measurement of how fast it feels.

I may revisit that paragraph… but perhaps you know what I mean? Round 50 is 272 stitches so it’s not small, but they speed by, 68 stitches at a time. There are increases every other row, hence the project growing so fast, but it all feels very manageable.

That purple stitch marker is holding a dreaded DROPPED STITCH. I made one to compensate for it, having thought I’d knit two together by accident…

I had to transfer to a longer cable; it had started to bunch up like a beret, which was cute and all but I wanted to be able to keep an eye on the cables and lie it out flat for photos. My mid-size needle cable is in the ether so I’m on my massive one and back to a magic loop of sorts. Where on earth do these odds and ends disappear to?

Should I quit now and wear it as headgear?

I’ve got to row 50 – further progress was delayed due to a) work on another project that has a birthday deadline, b) a not insignificant amount of time trying to set up a new ChromeCast to allow for wider choice of background viewing and c) a disagreement with row 47, wherein I knit, tinked, counted, re-read the pattern, and reknit the first section more than once.

I’m still not sure I got it right in the end – I’m fact I’m fairly confident I didn’t, since I had to make sneaky adjustments in the next rows, but I’m hoping that as long as the cables follow through correctly that it’ll all come out in the wash.

I’m also finding that I often forget to make a stitch at the end of sections as indicated – I think I’m so relieved when my count is right that I breeze on through it. I’ve been picking it up on the next row when that happens and so far, so good. Famous last words.

Coaster for scale. That’s Gallifreyan on there – don’t you just love it?

I’m now almost on to a new section – just four rows short of starting the short rows. I enjoyed writing that sentence more than I should have.

I don’t mind a short row, having used them to make a Topographical Scarf (Ravelry link) no less than three times. It remains to be seen whether I can perform them adequately in such a fine yarn though. Wish me luck!

Ughโ€ฆ.short rows! No matter how I try I always get โ€˜holesโ€™ in my rows where you turn

I do a wrap and turn with reasonable success, though I don’t pick up the wrap on the next row. Seems an unnecessary faff. This describes the method: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/short-rows-wrap-turn/

Interesting how differently the camera reads yarn color, depending on background!

Background but also lighting – the lightbulbs in my flat are very yellow which makes for a nice mood but bad photos. So it all depends what time of day I’m knitting.

I’ve also been known to wear a headlamp when knitting with similar colours ๐Ÿ˜„

It IS complicated, but it’s also well written which makes all the difference. Thank you so much, I’m delighted with it so far.

I absolutely love your shawl!! I’m trying to imagine how humongous the stitch count will be as you keep moving through the pattern.

Thank you so much! The construction is actually really interesting – make the centre circle, which you see here, then you use short rows to add corners and turn it into a square. Then you pick up one side of the square you just made and it’s more or less stockinette, with only (only!) 110 stitches, to the edge. Then repeat for the other side. So a lot of stockinette but not so many stitches ๐Ÿ˜Š

Oh my goodness! I just saw the finished shawl online. It is laceweight and there is lace at the ends!! I have the exact yarn that I need hanging out in the stash. Yep. The pattern went right into my cart. :-)
