Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three

After losing six or so hours to the Mega Tangle last week, I was close to the final rows before casting off (which, to be fair, is an undertaking in itself – you make a wee wing tip individually for each feather. Exciting!)

However…

It’s more a series of mini tangles than a mega tangle. Possibly worse?

Another tangle came along. I had a go at working it out but ultimately wasn’t ready to go through it all again. Out with the scissors!

Then…

I picked up to start knitting, only one full row and three short rows to go until the cast off section, and:

I just flat out hadn’t knit in pattern for the last six rows. Not the whole rows, mind, just one section. Not that it mattered because ultimately I was going to have to unravel the whole lot either way! The parts I’d missed were increases and there definitely wasn’t enough give to add them in now.

So off I went, grumbling but determined. Six short rows and two full rows later, I could start knitting forwards again, which is generally advised as being the more productive manner in which to knit.

Back to the point where I’d set off, I weighed the yarn (again). The pattern recommends a minimum 36g to do the finishing rows. I had 34g, and I’ve been getting so much more knitting per gram all the way through that I decided to wire in and hope for the best.

I had a first go at binding off a feather on Monday. It took me forty minutes and I had to undo it immediately. I’ve read through the pattern comments on Ravelry and understand what went wrong – but not why! I’m fundamentally misreading the pattern and no matter how I look at it, I can’t make it add up to get the result I know I should have. But in any case, at least I’ll be confident on my second go. (Narrator: this confidence was misplaced… I had another go at it on Wednesday lunchtime and it was a shambles. Back to consulting the pattern with a magnifying glass!)

Not much appreciable difference week on week, but we’ve been through a lot together.

As a reminder: this isย Wingspanย (Ravelry link) byย VectorKnitsย (Designerโ€™s site). Iโ€™m knitting it inย Cotton Kings Sultan Shadowย (Hobbii link). I’ve added this post to the Unraveled Wednesday linkup, with thanks to Kat as always for hosting.

Congrats for hanging in there. Truth be told my most recent FO isn’t FOed as my picture didn’t show the unfinished 30 some stitches still to be bound off. I ran out of yarn. Fortunately I have another skein at home so I’ll finish the bindoff this Friday. Shh – Don’t tell on me.

Oh man, 30 stitches short! What a scunner, as we say in this part of the world. I won’t tell a soul ๐Ÿ˜‰

“I could start knitting forwards again, which is generally advised as being the more productive manner in which to knit.” So true, and yet we never quite learn, do we? But as EZ said about frogging, “It’s just another opportunity to do more of our favorite hobby.”

It’s an excellent way to think about it, and sometimes I even believe it!

I’m sorry it is giving you such a hassle! It will be beautiful when you are done with it though :)

It will, and I’m clinging to that thought! I’ve finally figured out the wing tips and am over half way done with them.

While the yarn has been a challenge, it does have the benefit of not having any ends to sew in. Just the cast on, two cast off points, and the one bit where I had to cut it. Which is lucky because I sure am ready for it to be done ๐Ÿ˜

No ends to weave in is a big plus for sure! Hopefully the tangles are at an end and the rest goes smoothly :)

It sounds like one of those projects where you have to keep reminding yourself that it will all be worth it in the end!

Sounds like the slog is almost over – it’s a beauty, though.
